Fuifui Moimoi to continue with Rochdale Hornets

Former Workington Town crowd favourite Fuifui Moimoi is to play on for another season in 2022 with Rochdale Hornets.

The 41-year-old initially signed for the 2021 season with the Hornets after leaving Town where he had spent three happy years.

Now, although passing his 41st birthday in September, Moimoi shows no sign of slowing down and the vastly experienced prop is happy to go round again.

Born in Tonga, Moimoi joined Parramatta Eels in 2004 and spent ten years there, clocking up 201 appearances.  He was capped eight times by Tonga and 12 by New Zealand in that period.

Moimoi initially signed for Leigh in the Championship and had two seasons there before joining the inaugural Toronto Wolfpack side.

He spent a year with the Canadian side, before signing for Workington in 2018 and across three seasons played 43 games for the Derwent Park side, scoring 13 trademark powerhouse tries.

In 2021, he made 12 appearances for the Hornets, scoring eight tries including touchdowns against Town and Barrow.

Speaking to the Rochdale website head coach Matt Calland said:“Fui is great to have around and is a larger-than-life character defying all odds by playing at his age.

“He was one of our best performers last season giving us real impact off the bench. He leads from the front and doesn’t say too much but he certainly leads with his actions he’s really enjoying his rugby at Rochdale and that shows in his performances.”

When it was announced Fuifui wasn’t re-signing for Town after the 2020 season, the club issued a statement saying: “After three fantastic seasons it’s been agreed that Fuifui won’t be re-signing.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to have Fui as a senior member of the squad and he’ll be a big miss around the club.

“Fui will always hold a very special place in the rich history of Workington Town.”
