The race for the Championships in both the Premier and First Divisions of the County League warmed up with some significant results.
Premier Division leaders Aspatria were involved in a goal feast at home to mid-table Cockermouth as the game produced 10 goals and ended in a 5-5 stalemate.
The result put a dent in Aspatria’s title aspirations as captain Darryl Creighton (2), Lewis Little and Andrew Trestianu gave them enough goals to win most games, while they also had the help of an own goal.
Cockermouth had other ideas, though, and earned a point with goals from Luke Graham (2), Luke Ivison (2) and Keith Skillen.
Pirelli maintained their good run of form with a successive home win over Workington Athletic, taking the points in a 5-1 victory after last week’s Cup win.
Kieron Blair, Kelvin James and a Jordy Atkinson hat trick made-up the Pitrelli total with Athletic’s reply coming through Tom Pardini.
The Workington side will hope for better fortune when the two sides meet at Borough Park on Friday, 11th February when they contest the final of the Conway Cup.
Maryport Athletic hosted Workington Reds Development, with the visitors taking the points in a close game, through a single goal by Matty Foster.
Northbank claimed the bragging rights in the Carlisle derby with a 3-1 win over Carlisle City Development.
Kevin McKenna, Jonny Haughan and Ryan Johnston goals ensured the win. Thomas Hickey reduced the arrears for City’s Development squad.
The fixture provided a positive warm-up for Northbank, leading up to next weekend’s quarter final of the Benevolent Cup, when they travel to take on current Division One leaders Whitehaven Miners.
Gosforth travelled to Barton Laws to meet Wigton Harriers and neither side was able to register a goal with the end result a 0-0 stalemate.
In Division One Whitehaven Miners made their short trip to Mirehouse worthwhile, taking the points in a 5-3 victory.
Regular scorer Lewis Park notched a brace, supplemented with strikes from Jamie Thursby, Paul McNally and Adam Smith. Mirehouse kept the pressure on with Ryan Smith, Joe Dobinson and Nathan Dryden on target to push the Miners all the way.
Second placed UniSun visited the Falcon Complex to take on Windscale Reserve and remained a point behind Miners in the race for the title with a 4-0 win.
The score-line flattered UniSun who deservedly took the honours, but the difference being that the Atoms were unable to convert any of the chances they created against a solid UniSun backline.
Shane Dorward scored two and his first was a 30 yard effort which gave the home keeper little chance to prevent. Karlton Rudd and Liam Jackson completed the scoring.
Silloth travelled to West Cumbria for the second week in succession but made the journey back home pointless when they suffered a 5-2 defeat at Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves.
Ellis Trotter (2), Lewis Close, Lucas Craigie and Luke Youdale scored the Celtic goals. The ever gallant Silloth squad reduced the arrears with strikes from Tommy Dixon and Adam Carr.
