The Workington Comets name will roar back into action later this year as the Northside track revamp will allow racing again in the town.
Carlisle businessman Andrew Bain and former Comets star Steve Lawson have been working tirelessly to get the former Northside training track up to BSPA standard.
They were hoping that they would be able to enter a team into speedway’s third tier, the National Development League but after a spate of vandalism those plans were put on hold.
There was also a doubt about whether the new promotion team would be able to use the respected Workington Comets name.
But Lawson said today: “Once the vandalism problem had been sorted we have been able to do a lot of work on the track. We even got some shale down towards the end of January and things are taking shape nicely.
“There is still a lot of work to be done, though, which is why we can’t say definitely when we will be able to hold our first licenced meeting.
“The BSPA were very sympathetic after we had applied for the National Development League and were then affected by the vandals.

“There was also a bit of a public outcry about not being able to run under the old Comets name and I’m pleased to say we have now been granted permission to race as Workington Comets.”
The Comets closed after the 2018 season which had proved to have been their most successful ever in which they pulled off a trophy treble.

“As it stands now we will be entering a team in the NDL next year and will run open meetings this season.
“We are making good progress but lots still to do, so it’s too early to commit to a date,” said Lawson.
