Domestic action returned in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League with Workington’s United Club recording the most significant result of the round.
They beat fellow townies The Veterans Club B 4-1 away in a crucial top of Division Two table clash.
Opening up the match Sal Cakmak gave the home side the start they were looking for in taking a 1-0 lead for Vets B.
However as Mark Suitor and Division Two’s leading player Clive Lister took the next two frames momentum quickly shifted as the United Club led 2-1.
Frame three was a close affair and with United Club captain, Andrew Mitchelhill, winning the next on the black the match win was assured.
In the final frame of the fixture yet another close game ensued and with Dave Chapman more than up to the challenge he took the frame for a 4-1 United Club victory.
As a result the United Club stretch their lead at the top of Division Two to eight points, 32 points in total, over their opponents who sit in second on 24 points.
Workington Conservative Club made sure they maintained the Division One top spot with a 4-1 away win against Division Two’s Rack Shack.
A victory for Peter McAvoy gave Whitehaven’s Rack Shack some initial hope, before Richard McCarthy and Alan Moore (31 break) nullified that with solid wins for a 2-1 Cons lead.
Dave Holland was quick to make it 3-1 with a crushing victory in frame four and as Ryan Barker won a closely contested fifth and final frame the Cons win was complete.
Workington Cons sit top of Division One on 45 points with The Rack Shack third in Division Two on 16 points.
Workington’s Station Road B kept in touch with Division One leaders Workington Conservative Club with a 4-1 win against club rivals Station Road A.
In yet another match that saw the first frame result in the only point the losing team would claim, Tom Thompson put Station A 1-0 up.
Station B immediately hit back however as Simon Frazer won the next in convincing fashion to claim parity.
Frame three was the stage where Station B stamped their authority on the match and with Peter O’Hagan delivering an imperious performance that included breaks of 44 and 37 he put his team 2-1 up.
With confidence now flowing through the Station B side Mark Tunstall continued in his fine form to make it 3-1 and as Kevin Kirkham produced an equally powerful performance the B side ran out 4-1 winners.
Station B are now second in Division One on 42 points with Station A bottom of Division One on 26 points.
Finally, Workington Golf Club improved their position in the Division One table from fourth to third with a 3-2 home victory against Division Two’s Maryport Social Club.
The match begun with a runaway victory from the Golf Club’s Phil Sorfleet but in the lowest points total win this season Andrew Sharp levelled the match for Maryport.
Stephen Jackson took frame three on the black to put the golfers ahead once again but in another close game Gary Miller ensured the scores were level for the second time in the match with a victory in frame four.
The decider didn’t quite deliver the usual drama and in a fairly routine win Mark Cowen carried his team over the line as the Golf Club won 3-2.
