Cumbria now has the highest number of Michelin starred restaurants outside of London.

The county has seven one Michelin star restaurants, plus L’Enclume in Cartmel, owned by Simon Rogan, becomes the first ever restaurant outside London and the South East to be awarded three Michelin stars.

The Dog and Gun Inn, near Skelton, is Cumbria’s latest newcomer to hold the exclusive status, after being awarded one star.

Stars have also been retained by:

  • Hrishi at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House in Windermere (one star)
  • Cottage in the Wood in Braithwaite (one star)
  • Allium at Askham Hall, Askham (one star)
  • Rogan & Co in Cartmel (one star)
  • The Forest Side at Grasmere (one star)
  • Old Stamp House in Ambleside (one star)

Gill Haigh, managing director of Cumbria Tourism, said: “This is amazing news for the individual businesses involved and amazing news for the Lake District and Cumbria.

“These latest announcements by the team at the Michelin Guide demonstrate just how much choice our visitors and residents have when it comes to quality dining.

“Ten stars is just out of this world and really shines an extra bright light on Cumbria as one of the best destinations in the UK for a gourmet escape.

“Yet another reason to be so proud of what Cumbria has to offer.

“Of course Cumbria isn’t just famous for the widest range of places to eat and drink, including our Michelin restaurants, but for original produce like Cumberland sausage, sticky toffee pudding, Herdwick Lamb, Kendal Mint Cake and Grasmere Gingerbread, all of which can be bought or sampled at shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels the length and breadth of the county.

“It is an exceptional achievement for these restaurants to run at continuously high standards to retain their stars, especially against the backdrop of the pandemic which has provided a significantly challenging few years for the hospitality industry.

“The whole team at Cumbria Tourism send heartfelt congratulations to all our local winners who feature in the 2022 edition of the famed Michelin Guide.”

Ben Wilkinson, chef drector at The Cottage in the Wood, said: “It’s so good to see the depth of talent across Cumbria’s restaurants.

“From a world class three-star restaurant, to one-star country pubs, all backed by an amazing selection of suppliers and producers. Cumbria has hospitality to be very proud of.”
