A drunk car passenger caught on camera as he kicked and damaged a parking payment machine at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary has been left with a bill of more than £1,000.
Syed Mohammed Alom, 42, was brought to court after a late night incident outside the city hospital which was captured on CCTV.
A security officer initially saw a man at the front of the hospital just after midnight on November 22. He was asking about parking. Identified as Alom, he appeared to be under the influence and was abusive, shouting and swearing.
It came to light that a parking machine had been damaged to the tune of £1,972 with glass in the front broken.
Police found Alom in a highly intoxicated state, Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard.
When interviewed, he spoke of going to the accident emergency department with a friend, who had been driving. CCTV footage showed him kicking the machine repeatedly, and he was said to have been frustrated that it hadn’t worked as he tried to obtain a ticket.
Alom, of Sheffield Street, Carlisle, admitted criminal damage and had accepted that what he did while under the influence of alcohol was wrong, said his lawyer.
Magistrates fined Alom £80 and ordered him to pay a compensation contribution of £1,000.
