Anxious to avoid another free Saturday, Reds manager Chris Willcock has arranged a friendly with Lancaster City at the Giant Axe.
With a 11am kick-of, the game suits both clubs as Lancaster don’t have a NPL Premier Division fixture.
Reds, who lost 1-0 at home to Widnes on Saturday, ending a 13-match unbeaten run, were only playing their second game in February. It’s been a frustrating month, made worse without any League fixture this Saturday.
Willcock said: “We didn’t play well at all against Widnes but I think our lack of match practice was a contributory factor.
“Playing only one game in the month previous to that has not helped us at all. You can’t build momentum and there was no doubt we looked rusty in the game.”
Lancaster played at Borough Park in a pre-season friendly and won 2-1 with both goals from former Workington players Niall Cowperthwaite and Rob Wilson. A third ex-Reds man Liam Brockbank is also with the Dolly Blues.
After a bright start to the season City have slipped to 11th of 22 in the Premier Division table with 42 points from their 32 games.
They have 23 points at home – seven wins, two draws and six defeats – and 19 points on their travels from six wins, a draw and ten defeats. On Saturday they lost 3-1 at Gainsborough Trinity with Sam Bailey scoring with a late penalty for consolation.
