Chapel Bank Inter-departmental Fab Shop Football

Can some of our Cumbria Crack readers come up with some names for this team group from the early 1960s?

It is the Chapel Bank Inter-departmental Fab Shop Football winners on their way to Sheffield for the regional finals.

Ron Shillito, John Burns, Danny James – all good cricketers incidentally who could kick a football to good effect – are on there along with the likes of Stan Crellin and Ernie Talbot.

In fact, Ernie had been a part-timer with Workington Reds from 1952 to 1957, playing 18 times in the old Third Division North and scoring seven goals.

The highlight for Ernie came in his last season at Borough Park, before he moved to Netherfield.

He scored four goals in five games, including a brace in a famous Workington win.

Reds, who ended the season fourth in the League, had gone to Derby County and won 3-2 with Talbot (2) and Tommy Kinloch (penalty) securing the points. Derby went on to win the Championship, five points clear of the Reds.

Workington, under manager Norman Low, did the double over the champions, having won 2-1 at Borough Park in September in front of 13,919.

On the picture Ernie is standing in front of the bus, third from the right.
