Workington have added to their squad ahead of Thursday’s signing deadline with an experienced midfielder Jake Cottrell.
Nicknamed Three Lungs, and described as an all action player, Cottrell has had a successful non-League career.
The 33-year-old Mancunian has been playing for the Oldham club Avro in the North West Counties Premier Division.
But previously he had clocked-up regular appearances for FC United of Manchester and Chorley, sharing in promotion successes.
At Chorley he was one of the Magpies longest serving players where he was described as an all-action midfielder who can also play in defence.
Cottrell joined Chorley from FC United of Manchester in 2013 and was part of Garry Flitcroft’s all-conquering Northern Premier League title winners in his first season at Victory Park.
Five years later he was once more heavily involved in a promotion race that ended in play-off final victory over Spennymoor and Chorley’s return to the National League for the first time in nearly 30 years.
When he left ahead of the 2020-21 season for Ashton United, Cottrell earned high praise from the Chorley manager Jamie Vermiglio.
He said: “Jake’s been formidable since his arrival at the club and helped us secure two promotions. Known as the man with three lungs to the lads, he has been and will continue to be well respected by any player he comes up against.
“I was fortunate to play in the same team as Jake, and also to manage him. We thank Jake for all he’s done for the club and wish him every success in the fure.”
Cottrell had a season at Ashton before joining Avro for the current campaign.
NPL West leaders Warrington Rylands, who are two points ahead of Reds from two more games, have not made any deadline day signings.
Neither have third-placed Marine while Leek Town, who are fourth, have recruited three including Bryan Ly from Altrincham and Anthony Malbon from Kidsgrove Athletic.
Prescot Cables, who host Reds on Saturday, have been busy with three deadline signings – Leon Arnasalam from Macclesfield; Ryan McMahon from Marine and Kyle Sambor from Widnes.
