Jerichos in Windermere

A 19th-century Lake District hotel has been sold off an asking price of £1.15 million.

Built in 1870 by Robert Atkinson as The Waverley Temperance Hotel, Jerichos is one of the original Windermere hotels and enjoys an exceptional trading position in a quiet location, only a short stroll from the centre of the village.

The guest house still retains some of its original features today, combining Victorian interiors with the luxuries of the 21st-century. The hotel has a self-contained three-bedroom owners’ apartment, 10 ensuite bedrooms and planning permission for a further eight.

Chris & Jo Blaydes acquired Jerichos in 2008 and immediately set out an extensive refurbishment. After maintaining the property in excellent condition and building a strong reputation for 14 years, they are now ready for a new challenge. Jerichos has been sold to former teacher Hayley and former events and hospitality businessman Stephen Hallsworth, who will move to Windermere from Stafford.

Jo Blaydes said: “What a chapter it has been. We really have loved every second of our time at Jerichos hotel. We have been lucky to have experienced fourteen successful years that we will cherish and take with us to our new venture. We wish the new owners all the best.”

The popular Windermere hotel lies less than a mile from Bowness Bay and is framed by woodlands and Windermere lake, attracting thousands of visitors to the area year after year.

Haydn Spedding, consultant in the Hotels Agency team at Colliers, who completed the sale, said: “Chris and Jo acquired the property in 2008 when it was known as The Waverley, carrying over the name from their previous restaurant Jerichos. They have completely refurbished this 10-bedroom guest house in a contemporary style providing a high-quality bed and breakfast accommodation to their guests.

“The sale of Jerichos is one of the first of a significant number of guest house sales handled by Colliers that are currently in solicitors’ hands, underlining the current solid market conditions. It’s fantastic to see a significant level of buyers seeing business potential and looking beyond the challenges of COVID.”
