Workington Cons Club

Workington Conservative Club have claimed the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division One title in the very last game of the season.

Going into the final fixture, the Cons Club side knew they needed a win to see them as champions and with a 3-2 away victory against Division Two’s Maryport Social Club they did just that.

Richard McCarthy got Cons off to the perfect start with a win in the first before Andrew Scott levelled the match with a solid victory in the second.

An impressive win for Ben Scott put Maryport 2-1 up but with Cons now facing real danger of not only losing their season long unbeaten run, but also the league title, calm was required.

Up to the challenge, Cons’ Ryan Barker coolly took the fourth to force a decider and as team mate Julian Plaza won the final frame on the last couple of balls the league title was secured.

Division One challengers Station Road B went into their final match with the thought that only a convincing win would give them a chance to take the title.

However as opponents Workington’s Veterans Club A chose the last game to produce their best performance of the season the Station A side went down 4-1 at home.

The first frame looked like going in favour of the Vets A side nevertheless a twist of fate in Station A’s favour saw Simon Frazer put his side 1-0 up.

Frame two was finely balanced throughout and could have gone either way but with a couple of fine pots at the death Vets A’s Steve Garroway made it 1-1.

A break of 40 in the next by Vets A captain, Kevin Basnett was not only enough to win the frame but also ensured he secured the break aggregate trophy.

The next produced another win for the Vets A side and with Mark Tatton clearing in brilliant fashion in the last the Workington side finished in style.

Workington Golf Club finished a comfortable third in Division One on the back of a 5-0 home win over now relegated Station Road A.

A thumping win for Ryan Ismay in the first gave the golfers the momentum and as team mate Bryan Walker won the next the score moved to 2-0.

The third proved to be the closest frame of the night but in stretching their advantage Phil Sorfleet made it 3-0.

Mark Brasted carefully carved out the fourth to make it 4-0 and with Mark Cowen chipping away in the last another golf club victory was eventually delivered to complete the whitewash.

Finally, Workington’s Veterans Club B ended a frustrating second half of the season with a 4-1 home win over fellow Division Two opposition, Whitehaven’s Rack Shack.

A Michael ‘Sid’ Walker win in the first gave Vets A a lead that was soon doubled as Paul Vickers won the next.

Dave Teasdale was on top form in the third frame to win on the black for 3-0 and Sal Cakmak cued superbly in the fourth to deliver the evening’s most convincing victory to put the Vets A outfit 4-0 up.

Not to be deterred by the score-line Rack Shack’s Peter McAvoy went about his business quietly and with a good performance he took the last to avoid the whitewash.
