
Two former Workington riders were in starring roles for their clubs last night as the British speedway season continued to click into gear.
Charles Wright top-scored for Redcar Bears when they beat Plymouth 48-42 to win their opening Championship encounter of the season at the Ecco Arena.
Wright led the way for the Bears with 12 points and Erik Riss added 11+1.
Former Redcar man Michael Palm Toft, who guested successful for the Comets on a number of occasions, top-scored for the visitors with 11 as they took a league point from the meeting.
Meanwhile Berwick put four National Development League points on the board with an impressive 52-38 win in their opener at Armadale.
Leading the way for the Bullets was ex-Comets youngster Kyle Bickley (12+1) and Greg Blair (11+1) who were both in fine form, and the visitors were also dominant at reserve with youngster Ace Pijper clocking up 9+1 on his debut.
Berwick boss Gary Flint said: “Great performance from the guys, really spot on, and while they all played their part, what a debut for young Ace Pijper who won his first race and went on to take some good scalps.
“But overall this was a cracking team performance and they thoroughly deserved their away success.”
Wright is skippering the Bears this season in the Championship but also rising in the Premier League for Belle Vue.Bickley is also riding for Berwick’s Championship side along with two other former Comets in Ty Proctor and Ricky Wells
