Eve of cricket season prompts raft of friendlies

On the eve of the new Cumbria Cricket League season a number of clubs are holding friendly games this weekend.

Furness are fitting in two games against Northern League opposition, Kendal today and Netherfield tomorrow.

But the champions have suffered a setback when they learnt their hugely successful pro from last season, Promod Maduwantha would not return.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder, who was only dismissed five times in 16 innings and had an average of 173, had encountered visa issues for a return to the UK.

So Furness had to change direction, move quickly, and have signed up the Pakistani all-rounder Saeed Khan.

Carlisle, champions in 2019, are having a friendly among club members on Saturday with first and second teamers being mixed in the two line-ups.

There’s a very special event at Haverigg on Saturday in memory of Danny Lee who played for all three clubs and died last year.

It’s a T20 format with Haverigg taking on Whitehaven and the winners then playing Seascale.

At Egremont the newly promoted home side are playing a mixed Workington side. Egremont’s new overseas amateur Jason Grosvenor is due in Manchester in the morning, so might get to see his new team-mates in action later in the day.
