Hensingham try scorers Noel Branthwaite and and Koby Conway (Ben Challis)

Hensingham collected their second win of the season in the clash of the basement teams in NCL Third Division.

The West Cumbrians used home advantage well to win 26-16 and leave visitors Eastmoor Dragons still seeking their first victory.

There were ten points in it at half-time with the hosts ahead 14-4 and they maintained their lead in a drawn second-half.

It wasn’t really settled until Scott Egan went in for his second try three minutes from the end.

Noel Branthwaite (2), Coby Conway and Travis Scott scored the other tries. The margin of victory could have been wider but Branthwaite only landed one goal.

Although Hensingham remain next to bottom, local rivals Seaton Rangers are among three clubs lying joint second in pursuit of 100 per cent leaders East Leeds.

Seaton had an important 18-14 home win over Waterhead Warriors who had gone into the game level on points.

It was another important feather in Seaton’s cap as Waterhead are this year’s BARLA National Cup winners.

Seaton had led 6-2 with a try and conversion from Dom Smallwood against a penalty by Cieran Dean.

In the second half Seaton scored tries from JJ Key and Craig Foster, both converted by Smallwood.

Former Workington Town loose forward Hanley Dawson has gone back to his former community club Millom – and starred on his second debut.

The Woollybacks beat Leigh East 30-26 in a tense contest which enabled the south Cumbrians to leapfrog their visitors in the table.

Easts had actually gone in front after just three minutes with a try by full-back Kieran Prescott who went on to claim a hat-trick.

But that early try was the only time that the visitors were in front as by half-time Millom had established a 20-10 lead.

Dawson didn’t get on the score-sheet but had a pivotal role at loose-forward in their success.

Ethan Kelly, who has also returned to his amateur roots after pro service at Whitehaven, North Wales Crusaders and Barrow, helped himself to a couple of tries.

The other Millom touchdowns came from Jarty Robinson (2), Hadley Thompson and Ryan Dickinson. Jack Newbegin kicked three goals.

Barrow Island are up to second in Division Two after a comfortable 40-18 win at struggling Beverley.

Although they conceded the first try of the game the Islanders responded positively and by half-time virtually had the game won with a 32-6 lead,

Max Anderson (2), Aidan Wright, Ben Garner, Adam Ford and Nathan Sneesby scored tries with Adam Jackson kicking four goals.

It was a lot tighter in the second-half but the south Cumbrians were able to add tries by Sam Jones and Ryan Clegg.

Kells weren’t at their best but held-off a strong Skirlaugh challenge to win 22-18.

Kells coach Peter Smith said: “It was a bit different from our win a week earlier but every game is different. I think they tend to call it winning ugly.

“Skirlaugh had a real go over the last 20 minutes when we spent a, lot of time defending our line but we got there.

“Maybe it will do us good because we have a tough trip to Humberside next Saturday to play Hull Dockers who are level on points.”

Kells had the tonic of an early try from Reece O’Neill and they led 12-6 at half-time with Mason Lewthwaite also crossing and Ross Gainford adding the conversions.
Jordan Burns was the hero in the second-half with two tries, one of which was converted by Gainford.

Wath Brow Hornets and Egremont Rangers had played on Easter Saturday so had no game at the weekend.
