Eighteen members of Patterdale mountain rescue team were called out on Tuesday afternoon following reports that a man in his 60s had fallen 30ft and broken his ankle, possibly near Dove Crag, above Hartsop.
The alarm was raised by the man’s son, who called his girlfriend about the incident and she, in turn, alerted Cumbria police.
They called the Langdale and Ambleside rescue team, who liaised with the Patterdale team’s duty leader. He decided a full Patterdale call-out was needed as the man and his son were probably in the team’s area.
Since it was not possible to contact the pair or locate them using their phones, the plan was to start searching the Deepdale and Dovedale valleys. While team members were responding, however, the duty leader was informed that the two men had turned up at their vehicle, safe and well.
The incident lasted one-and-a-half hours.
