The final trophy has been decided in the Workington and District Sunday League.
The race for the Division One title had reached the perfect climax with a game between the two contenders who were level on points.
It was a thriller, too, with hosts Sun Athletic looking homed and hosed with a three-goal lead only for Maryport Athletic to fight back with two goals in the last 10 minutes.
That’s the way it stayed to the final whistle leaving the Maryport players to reflect on a missed penalty in the first half which the Sun keeper saved with is legs.
League secretary Ron Caffrey watched the game and then presented the trophy to the jubilant Sun Athletic team.
He said: “It was an honour to watch the game and I have to say for grassroots football it had everything.
“There were three goals from Sun’s Daniel Dobson from outside the penalty area and the second was a beauty as he bent the ball past the Maryport goalkeeper and into the net.
“Maryport Athletic were awarded a penalty in the first half but the Sun goalkeeper save it with his legs and from the rebound the ball hacked wide.
“In the last 10 minutes Maryport Athletic came back into the game with two goals from Cieran Laverty but couldn’t find an equaliser.”
There’s only one game left in the League and that’s a Premier Division game tomorrow night, kick off 6.30pm, Sun Inn v Deer Orchard.
Sun Inn are already runners-up in the Premier League so it’s been a good seaswon for the Aspatria pub with both their teams having something to pick up.
The Sunday League AGM is on Monday, July 4, in the Tony Hopper Bar. Borough Park, Workington and hopefully there will be new teams attending with a view to joining.
