Maryport’s Ricky Lightfoot has become only the third person to win the gruelling Man v horse race in Wales.
The race pits man against beast on a 22.5-mile course in Powys. Around 1,000 runners and 50 horses took part.
Trail runner Ricky, 37, beat the first home by more than two minutes – and scooped a £3,500 prize. Only two people before Ricky have won since the first race was held in 1980 – the first in 2007.
The event began after founder Gordon Green argued in his local pub that a runner could beat a horse over a long distance.
The BBC reported that Ricky, a firefighter, had been awake for 29 hours before running the race. He had flown in from Tenerife – catching a flight to Manchester at midnight on Friday.
The father-of-two is a member of Ellenborough Athletic Club and has won several fell running titles.
