Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and St Bees RNLI were mobilised after a vessel’s distress signal was activated off Seascale beach.

The distress signal was close to the shore and commercial diving vessel Callan, which was in the area, also received it and conducted an immediate search on behalf of the Coastguard.

Whitehaven Coastguard said: “With the sea state calm, they were able to confirm there was no vessels or casualties in the immediate area and neither were there any flotsam or jetsam present on the surface.

“Coastguard rescue teams conducted a visual and physical search from vantage points and the low water line between Sellafield and Seascale, with enquiries made with both the public and the local boating club in the area.

2At the same time, St Bees RNLI conducted checks on vessels further afield from the initial co-ordinates, then returned to complete an expanding box search.

“With nothing found, no vessels reported overdue and the alert not containing vessel details, all assets were stood down pending further information.

“We would like to thank the commercial dive boat skipper and their crew for the swift and professional response in providing assistance.”
