It’s been a tough start to the season for Aspatria Hornets but two successive victories have brightened the mood.
The second win came in the Amateur Cup when they made the short trip to Glasson Rangers and went home with a 30-24 success.
David Wilson (2), Daryl Creighton (2), Jack Clegg and Ross Barton scored the Aspatria tries and three conversions from Rocco Okesene completed the job.
Glasson were always in contention however led by Matthew Burns with a hat-trick of tries. Former Aspatria player Luke Johnson did his bit too with a try and four goals.
In the same competition Wath Brow A got through 26-16 against Egremont A in a game which ended tighter than it had looked earlier.
After 55 minutes Wath Brow had established a 26-0 lead and it was only really in the final quarter of the game that Egremont made inroads.
It was 16-0 at half-time with four unconverted tries from Robbie Bagley (8mins), Mark Watson (29), Liam Mattinson (33) and another from Bagley five minutes before the break.
It didn’t take long for Hornets to increase their lead as Luke Jeremy crossed two minutes after the re-start and then on 54 minutes Jack Casey scored the sixth try. It was the only one converted as Jenson Olstrum added the extras.
The Egremont response started on 57 minutes with a try from Jordan Baird and Lee Rodgers followed him over on 72 minutes, adding the conversion himself.
In the last minute of the game, the experienced Matt Bewsher got over for a third Egremont try and Rodgers converted.
There should have been a third game in the Amateur Cup but Seaton A couldn’t get a team to play Kells A and the Copeland side will go through.
There was one game in the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland ARL in which champions Ellenborough won 54-20 at Cockermouth Titans.
The Elbra tries were scored by John Todd (2), Zack Olstrum (2), Andy Ostle (2), Owen Hoyles, Keenan Winter, Jordan Ostle and Matthew Bell. The seven goals were kicked by Hoyles (3), Winter (3) and Jordan Ostle.
Cockermouth’s response came through tries by Robert Scott (2), Matthew Irving and James Lightfoot. Irving kicked two goals.
