Carlisle United beat Penrith 5-1 in their opening friendly at Frenchfield in front of an excellent crowd of 1,040.
Paul Simpson used two outfield substitutes, changes the side completely for the second half and included a trialist goalkeeper.
It was a decent work-out for both teams with Carlisle enjoying a slender 1-0 half-time lead before Penrith levelled early in the second-half.
But Carlisle’s Football League experience showed in the last half an hour against an enthusiastic, young Penrith side.
The opening goal had come on 34 minutes from new signing Ryan Edmondson who finished clinically after being played in by Omari Patrick.
Four minutes into the second half and the trialist keeper for Carlisle was picking the ball out of the net. Andy Murray-Jones was on target with a low shot from outside the area into the bottom corner.
It didn’t take long for Carlisle to regain the lead. On 51 minutes Patrick curled home a fine free kick from 30 yards.
A minute later it was 3-1 as Penrith lost the ball in their own half and Nic Bollado picked his spot to fire home.
The fourth came on 68 minutes when new recruit Owen Moxon found Kristian Dennis with a fine cross-field ball and the striker rifled home.
Five minutes later Dennis grabbed his second and Carlisle’s fifth, controlling the ball and expertly and finishing almost in the same movement.
Carlisle follow up on Wednesday against Kendal Town and then visit Workington on Saturday.
