Gallery 4A in Penrith

A new exhibition for art lovers has opened in Penrith.

Gallery 4a is hosting artists from Carlisle Contemporary Arts until the end of this month.

Artists, sculptors, jewellers, ceramicists and felt makers are showing their Penrith and Eden Valley-inspired creations in the gallery, next to the EVAN gallery on Corney Place.

Connect hopes to offer exciting and original artworks which depict landmarks and landscapes of the Penrith and North Lakes area.

The 10 artists involved include David Sims, of Penrith. He said: “My connection to this area in particular and Cumberland in general goes back to early childhood. I was brought to see my uncle’s hill farm as a child, in early teens l travelled by Ribble bus from Lancaster, to work with him on the farm during school holidays.

“In late teens, as a keen club cyclist, l explored the area in detail. Thirty-five years ago, we relocated from the Midlands and l continued to work as a graphic designer/illustrator. On retirement 15 years ago, l reverted to my original training in fine art, and have painted the Cumbrian landscape continually. I genuinely connect to this beautiful area.”

Amanda Mudge, who is exhibiting both her popular Lakeland-inspired jewellery alongside new abstract paintings, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to be in the town and connect with the people of Penrith and Eden. We are really looking forward to meeting people who visit us.”

David Hollins is showcasing five new paintings of Penrith and Keswick landmarks. He said: “My personal favourite of the bunch is the Clock Tower and Market Square. I had such fun chatting to curious onlookers while painting on location. I hope local people will come and see my interpretations of their towns.”

Other artists involved are Marilyn Laugeson (paintings), Anne Bryson (paintings), Ray Pearson (ceramics), David Phillips (photography), Mark Hamilton (sculpture) and Vanessa Bamkin (textiles).

The exhibition is open now and runs Tuesdays to Saturdays 10am to 4pm until July 30. Private viewings outside these hours can be arranged.
