Barrow Raiders bounced back in style from a disappointing home defeat by Halifax to win 24-16 at York City Knights.
The Raiders had built on a score on nine minutes when Jarrod Sammut put in a little grubber early in a set and collected to round two defenders and touchdown.
Ryan Shaw made no mistake with the conversion but the lead lasted only six minutes.
Taking advantage of a couple of penalties for high tackles York got into a good attacking position and from a floated pass by Liam Harris it was Joe Brown who cut inside to make the line. Jamie Ellis converted.
It was set for set until the 22nd minute when Barrow regained the lead.
Gary Wheeler seemed to have been stopped but he did really well to offload and Shaw profited by scoring in the corner. He also landed a fine touchline conversion.
There was another chance for Barrow but speedster Tee Ritson knocked on when he tried to get on the end of a kick through from Hakim Miloudi.
With a 12-6 half-time lead then next score would be a defining one and it took 17 minutes for the try to arrive – with Barrow successful.
It was Shaw again who delivered when he took a looping pass, cut back inside and went over, adding the conversion for good measure.
York were increasingly desperate but on 64 minutes they gave themselves hope with a try from close range by Pauli Pauli which Harris converted.
Six minutes from time the game was back on a knife-edge. Harris kicked long where Ritson gathered behind his own line but knocked-on and James Glover swooped to touchdown.
Harris missed the conversion attempt so it’s a two-point game.
On 78 minutes Barrow could have clinched it but Wheeler knocked on with the line beckoning.
However in the last minute Sammut sealed the win for Barrow when he got through to score and Shaw wrapped-up the victory with the conversion.
