A Cumbrian team looking to revive American football in the south of the county is up and running again – and needs players.
Cumbria Wildcats have been holding as series of taster sessions at Kendal Rugby Union club and a fourth get-together has been arranged for this Sunday, from 11am to 1pm.
David Hughes, who used to play for Furness Phantoms, is one of the people involved in relaunching the sport after the pandemic wiped out the three participating clubs.
He said: “We used to have Carlisle Kestrels, our Furness team and Morecambe Bay Storm but the pandemic meant that we all folded.
“One of the guys at the Storm suggested reviving the sport, so Cumbria Wildcats was chosen as the name and we have begin the task of recruiting new members.

“The aim is to be accepted as an associate member of the British American Football Association next year and played three or four games when we would be rated on how we were run, how many players we had and whether we could be accepted into the League.
“That hopefully would be Division Two in the North region for 2024 but we have to be sure there are enough players to be able to compete next year as an associate member.
“In our three sessions so far we have been encouraged by numbers, but they are all from the south of the county and north Lancashire. We would really like to see people from north and West Cumbria getting involved.

“The taster sessions are for those who have played the game before and also for anyone who fancies giving it a try. We are also encouraging juniors as well to give it a try.
“We have experienced coaches who have played the game for a number of years involved in the tasters, and participants don’t have to worry about kit.”
Mint Bridge, Kendal is the place to be on Sunday from 11am for those interested.
