KFC building in Penrith

A new restaurant chain is set to move into the former KFC drive-thru in Penrith.

Tim Hortons, a popular Canadian chain which has over 50 branches in the UK, has lodged planning applications for the site on Bridge Lane.

It sells coffee, doughnuts, burgers and toasted sandwiches.

Planning applications have been submitted to Eden Council on behalf of the firm – which is visited by more than 5.3 million Canadians a day – for building alterations and elevations, including recladding and advertisement consent for new signs.

The brand was founded in 1964 in Ontario and now has 4,500 stores.

Known affectionately as Timmy’s, the planning applications have been prepared and submitted by Williams Gallagher Town Planning Solutions Ltd (Williams Gallagher) on behalf of TH UK & Ireland Ltd.

A statement accompanying the application said: “Tim Hortons is a relatively new entrant to the UK market and can best be described as a restaurant chain with a coffee and bakehouse offer.”

The KFC branch closed its doors in May after the lease on the building ran out and was not renewed. At the time, KFC said it hoped it would reopen.
