Keswick firefighters were called out after smoke was spotted coming out of a bin on Lake Road.

When the crew arrived, at around 9.30pm last night, July 15, they found a disposable barbecue still alight in the wheelie bin.

Following the call, they said: “We kindly ask with the warmer weather and the increased numbers of people visiting the area to please follow our safety information.”

The information is:

  • Only use barbecues in a suitable and safe area and never leave them unattended.
  • Avoid using open fires in the countryside.
  • When camping, use torches instead of candles and place your cooking area well away from the tent.
  • Don’t leave bottles or glass in woodland.
  • Extinguish cigarettes properly and don’t throw cigarette ends on the ground – take your litter home.
  • If you see a fire, report it to the fire and rescue service immediately.

They added: “Keswick crews will be out this weekend, down by the lake and surrounding areas giving out wildfire and water safety advice.”
