Workington won 3-1 at Penrith last night as they got back into friendly action after the weekend postponement at Consett.
Reds were dominant in the first-half, monopolising possession and creating several opportunities, but only led 1-0 at the break.
From a short corner Dav Symington worked a shooting opportunity and from the angle of the box cracked a low one in which was deflected past keeper Lewis Newton.
Another Symington thunderbolt was acrobatically saved by Newton; Ben Hughes headed over from eight yards and a clever chip from Conor Tinnion was just over the angle of post and bar.
Penrith had kept their shape well throughout with limited possession and only had one decent opportunity.
Hayden Tait played the ball low across a crowded six yard box which only needed a touch but it flew out of play on the opposite side of the field.
Workington were close at the start of the second-half when Lewis Reilly headed wide from a good position and he saw a thundering drive tipped onto the bar by Newton.
The second goal came on 52 minutes when a new trialist’s shot was parried by Newton and Reilly scored easily from close range.
But Penrith hit back immediately when Jamie Armstrong broke clear down the middle and faced with a one-on-one with keeper Jim Atkinson fired home off the foot of the post.
From that point the Northern League side grew in confidence and gave as good as they got.
An influx of substitutions did not deter their approach and Atkinson was the busier keeper with Reds having to work hard in defence.
It was Workington, though, who got the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute. Matty Clarke got round the back on the left and his low ball across goal was finished off stylishly by a second trialist.
Afterwards Danny Grainger revealed that the non-scoring trialist, who had played the whole of the second half was a former team-mate. He did not say where.
“We have shared a dressing room before and he’s a good player. He will be playing for us again and we will see what happens,” said the Reds manager.
The trialist who scored had played previously for them in earlier friendlies.
