A bid to demolish a former Workington dance hall is set to be discussed next week.
Redacre Investments wants to knock down the Princess Hall on Princess Street and replace it with two shops, seven flats and three town houses and its application will go before Allerdale council’s development panel on Tuesday.
The prominent building, which overlooks Vulcan Park, used to be the DVLA centre and more recently, was a second hand furniture store.
Last month, there was a fire in the building.
Councillors will be asked to give the chief planning officer delegated powers to approve the scheme – but only if Redacre Investments LLP pay £6,000 towards new road markings and make parking alterations. If that legal agreement is not met within three months, the scheme will be refused.
Councillors previously discussed the application in May and deferred their decision for more information about road safety and parking.
The application has attracted several objections, including from Workington Town Council, which raised concerns about the shops as there were empty units in the town centre – a five-minute walk away. It said councillors had also received a number of objections from residents.
There were 58 initial objections from neighbours, although some were multiple and a 16-name petition against the plans.
