Cumbria’s final NCCA Championship game of the season looks likely to be affected by the changing weather.
It had been left interestingly poised after the first day with Cumbria replying to a Hertfordshire total of 267.
But heavy rain this morning prevented a start and prospects weren’t good for the rest of the day.
The visitors were bowled out in 63.3 overs but half their total was scored by Kishen Velani (134).
A former Essex and England Under-19s batsman, he hit a century of his runs in boundaries with 23 fours and two sixes.
The 27-year-old batted for just over three hours and faced 143 deliveries before Cumbria’s leading wicket-taker Matt Siddall had him caught by skipper Matthew Sempill.
Open James Latham had made 42 but the only other real support for Velani came from skipper Ben Waring, a former Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year.
Waring made 44 and helped Velani add 123 for the ninth wicket, which proved a frustrating partnership for the hosts.
Once again Siddall was Cumbria’s main wicket-taker with 4-99 off 24.3 overs, the first time in seven Championship innings this season he has failed to take five wickets.
Brodie Glendinning chipped-in with 2-32 and Nico Watt had 2-44.
Ben Walkden (37) and Evan Williams (23) put on 60 for the first wicket but their departures was followed by Nathan Waterston, out for a duck on his home Furness track.
Ben Davidson was fourth out for a dogged nine and skipper Sempill (29no) and Sam Dutton (8no) were repairing matters at the close when they had taken the score to 107-4.
