Cumbria finished with a draw in their final NCCA Championship game against Hertfordshire.
A late start on Monday was followed by an early finish on Tuesday with Cumbria battling to stave off defeat.
They picked up nine points from the game to Hertfordshire’s 10.
Cumbria had been set 296 to win after the visitors had declared on 211-7, and when rain ended play just before the last hour they had reached 128-6.
They had been 53-5 but a gritty, unbeaten 49 from Carlisle’s Ben Davidson defied the Hertfordshire attack.
There was some belligerent support from Haverigg wicket-keeper Drew Postlethwaite (36) scored off 29 deliveries and most from boundaries – six fours and a six.
Brodie Glendinning was 11 not out as Cumbria battled to save the game, knowing they only really had three wickets to spare after Sam Medhurst broke his thumb in the first Hertfordshire innings.
Earlier Cumbria had struggled to contain Hertfordshire’s star batsman Kishen Velani. He followed his first innings century with a classy 78 while opener Dominic Chatfield made 67.
In the 2019 season before COVID struck Chatfield won the Wilfred Rhodes Trophy for the highest batting average in Minor County Championship matches.
In six three-day matches he scored 627 runs at an average of 69.67 with a highest score of 174 not out against Northumberland.
Carlisle’s Nico Watt was Cumbria’s most successful bowler taking 5-40 from six overs.
Cumbria can now concentrate on the NCCA Trophy final at Wormsley on Sunday, August 28 when they face holders and familiar rivals Berkshire.
