Workington have been handed the toughest of draws in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.
After a 7-0 win at West Allotment Celtic on Saturday the Reds have been drawn away to South Shields, big guns of NPL Premier.
Manager Danny Grainger said: “It’s a tough game against a good team but we will be up for it.”
South Shields were a bit similar to Reds last season. They led the table for a long time, lost the last game of the season to the bottom side and finished second. Then in the play-off the semi-final they lost out. While Reds lost in extra time they went out on penalties.
Former Sunderland star Kevin Phillips is the manager and has made nine new signings in the close season including ex-Carlisle forward Lewis Alessandro.
They had started with a 2-0 home win over Chris Willcock’s Stalybridge Celtic but since then have drawn 1-1 at Ashton Utd and 2-2 on Saturday at Marine.
But South Shields and the FA Cup on Saturday, September 3 is well down Grainger’s list of priorities as Reds will play three key League games before the trip to the north east.
Grainger’s men host Trafford tomorrow night; travel to Witton Albion on Saturday and on Bank Holiday Monday have an attractive home game against Clitheroe.
