Wigton put a dent in Keswick’s Cumbria League title hopes with a fine victory at Lowmoor Road.
Keswick had been hoping to stay on the tails of Carlisle and Cockermouth, or even improve from third place, ahead of their final fixture at home to the Edenside club.
But defeat by 55 runs against a Wigton side enjoying their best season in the top flight, will make it tough now to snatch the crown.
Wigton were actually put in to bat and for the second home game in a row posted a score in excess of 250.
They made 271-8 but the total was built on a third wicket stand of 172 between club professional Chris Hodgson (129) and young opener Kieran Little (95).
Hodgson hit10 fours and seven sixes in accumulating a career best score and his maiden League century.
For Little the disappointment of missing a century followed a similar effort from his brother Lewis (now in Australia) who fell in the last home game for 96.
No other Wigton batsman reached double figures while Ben Sharp was the most successful bowler with 3-64.
Keswick had the armoury at the top of the order to challenge that total but from 167-4 subsided to 216 all out off the penultimate ball of the innings.
Openers Will Atkinson (57) and Stephen Hindmarch (31) put on 69 for the first wicket and there was good support from professional Risith Upamal (49) and Paul Hindmarch (31) but very little else.
Hodgson completed a good personal match for Wigton by taking 3-28 from his ten overs.
If Keswick were suffering their rivals Carlisle and Cockermouth were finding it was too close for comfort in their games.
At the Valentine Ground Carlisle squeezed home by 10 runs against Workington while Cockermouth had 16 runs to spare in their win against Cleator.
Runs down the order proved invaluable to Carlisle after reaching 97-7.
Fraser Conn (28no) produced his most important batting contribution of the season to see Carlisle to a more respectable 140 all out.
Earlier Ben Davidson (29) had stayed around from 23-2 until he was eighth out at 123-8. He had Nico Watt (21) put on 32 valuable runs for the sixth wicket.
Ben Scott took 3-27 from his ten overs for Workington with good back-up from Adam Chambers (2-22) and Regan Jackson (2-34).
Workington were half-way there with just two wickets down but they were unable to see it through.
Chambers (27) and professional Lahiru Dilshan (20) were unable to build on their starts and gradually fell away to finish on 130.
Watt was the leading Carlisle bowler with 4-20 from his ten overs as he got his eye in ahead of the NCCA Trophy final with Cumbria.
Cockermouth were indebted to a former Cumbria player Greg Platten for reaching 123 after they had been put into bat at home by Cleator.
They were 45-4 when he went in and thanks to an unbeaten 41 they reached what would be considered a defendable total.
Opener Alex Grainger had made 23 earlier with David Blackwell (5-21) from his ten overs proving Cleator’s ace in the hole.
Cleator fared no better but were never out of it as befits a low-scoring contest.
Open Steven Lee (21) had top-scored until wicket-keeper Graeme Lilly (22) gave the tail some impetus and Owen Bell (19no) responded well batting at nine.
In the end they fell short in the 47th over on 107 with the Cockermouth bowlers sharing the wickets around.
Matthew Siddall led the way with 2-12 from his ten overs, backed-up by Grainger (2-16), Josh Brown (2-23) and Sam Sharp (2-24).
In the battle to avoid the drop Whitehaven scored an important win to move off the bottom in another low-scoring game.
Put into bat by fellow strugglers Dalton they had lost half the side for 50 and slid further into trouble at 56-9.
Then Jack McNicholas (23no) found an able partner in last man Ethan Wright (11) and the highest stand of the innings (33) lifted them to 89 all out.
Rangika Pinnala Don (5-14) from ten overs looked to have given Dalton the chance of a vital win.
But they failed miserably, bowled out for 53 in 19.4 overs with nobody in double figures.
Bowling honours were shared by Andrew Cameron (4-14) and Jonathon Stewart (4-17) as Whitehaven leapfrogged their opponents off the bottom.
Haverigg have been on a bad run but they put up a good show against neighbours Millom before losing by two wickets in the 48th over.
Cumbria wicket-keeper Drew Postlethwaite hit 61 from an all-out total of 143 as Millom pro Primosh Perara took a season’s best 6-35.
Millom slipped to 23-3 but Perara (40), Graham Dawson (31) and Anthony Foster (23no) rectified the situation and in a tense finish they collected the points with 2.1 overs to spare and two wickets.
Reigning champions Furness won at Egremont after being put in to bat and scoring 228 all out in their 50 overs.
Ryan Griffiths was the hero with an unbeaten 112 batting at five after Nathan Waterston reached 1,000 runs for the season when he scored 24 and was promptly clean bowled by overseas amateur Javon Grosvenor,
Five Egremont bowlers took wickets with Shaun Bostock (2-22) best from ten overs.
The hosts never challenged the Furness total and were bowled out in 30.2 overs for 75. Opener Ellis Gribbin (17) was top scorer.
Like Egremont, five Furness bowlers took wickets with Elliot Maxfield finishing the innings off with 3-3 from 3.2 overs.
