As part of the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 celebrations and Food Carlisle’s Food at the Frontier project, there will be a guided tour of the disappearing ditch in the grounds of Susan’s Farm at Houghton – a part of the wall not normally accessible to the public.
Susan’s Farm will be open between 11am and 4pm on Sunday September 18.
Short, guided walks along the disappearing ditch and Susan’s Farm will be available at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm, where people will be able to find out more information about how the land is farmed sustainably with the environment in mind, as well as sample some Roman cooking courtesy of local chef John Crouch and enjoy engineering demonstrations with STEM ambassador Tony Dixon.
After the walks, visitors will be welcome to buy refreshments from the education centre and food from local producers will also be available to purchase on the day.
The event is free to attend and people are urged to wear appropriate clothing for the weather – wellies are recommended.
Car parking is available in the police compound across from the field entrance, approx. 200 yards north of the BP garage.
Susan’s Farm address is 145 Houghton Road, Houghton CA3 0LD.
The event is a part of the Food at the Frontier project conceived by Food Carlisle to tie in with the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 celebrations. The project links food production to the changing landscape, soils, climate, and elevation along the Wall from west to east and includes urban food production as well as rural, celebrating local sustainable producers, growers and food businesses.
Alongside a food trail, which is currently in development, a series of events are being hosted across the Carlisle area to engage with communities.
