The Queen has died, aged 96.

We have opened a virtual book of codolences for you to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II – the longest reigning monarch in English history.

She died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon, a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

Earlier today, the palace issued a statement earlier today saying the Queen was under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors were concerned for her health.

She pulled out of a virtual Privy Council yesterday, with doctors advising her to rest.

The Queen appointed Liz Truss as Prime Minister at Balmoral on Tuesday, instead of at Buckingham Palace, because of the monarch’s mobility issues.

Members of the Royal Family, including the Duke of Sussex, Duke of Cambridge, Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Charles and Princess Anne made their way to Balmoral to be with the Queen.

People are gathering outside Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral.

Pay your tribute to Queen Elizabeth II below:

What will happen next?

Prince Charles has immediately become king. The king and queen consort will stay at Balmoral tonight. It is not known if he will be called King Charles or choose another name.

Plan Operation London Bridge comes into effect, which has been in place since the 1960s.

It is understood that the Queen will be moved to Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and then carried up the Royal Mile to St Giles Cathedral for a funeral service.

The Royal Train will carry her to London for a burial service.

A national day of mourning will be declared on the day of the funeral.

The Queen was a regular visitor to Cumbria. Here are some photos from our sister paper – the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald – archive. We’d love to see your photos of Her Majesty in the county – please email them to [email protected]
