Plans have been lodged with the city council to open a convenience store and in the ground floor of an unused building in Carlisle.
Carlisle City Council has received an application for planning permission to create the shop and residential units at 81-85 English Street.
The proposal, submitted by M&L Richardson will see the ground floor area refurbished, a new shop front and entrance doors created and a new separate entrance at street level, allowing access to the upper floor flats.
The existing shop front has a late 1960s/early 1970s shop front and its replacement has been created in accordance with the Carlisle City Council Shopfronts design guide. It is hoped that this will see the building “blend into and enhance the character of the street frontage.”
Although it is not a listed building, 81-85 English Street is within Carlisle City Centre Conservation Area.
Supporting statements submitted by M&L Richardson said: “There are a number of Listed Buildings in the location of the property, notably The Courts buildings which are part of the forthcoming University of Cumbria development.
“Care will be taken to retain the materials currently in use to minimise impact on the heritage of the area.
“To the rear of the building, there is an existing two-storey element. This is to be converted to offices, toilets and store areas. Two new doors are to be formed to allow access onto existing flat roof areas.”
Security shutters will be included in the shop front design. Overall, proposals will be designed “with crime prevention in mind, reflecting the attributes of safe, sustainable places for both the benefit of the property and its neighbouring properties.”
