The penultimate week of the DVARD summer league fixtures concluded with the second tier title still undecided.
In DVARD Division Two, Whitehaven’s Andy Moore and Workington’s Darren Lawson had their fixture postponed and is likely to be the title decider when they do complete it,
Meanwhile Seaton’s Stephen Jackson assured himself of third place despite a defeat by Chris Hunter from Workington.
Hunter earned a hard-fought 2-0 lead before the next two black ball frames were shared to provide Hunter with an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Jackson claimed a comfortable final frame for a respectable 3-2 reversal but was enough to secure the third place.
In a mid-table battle Dave Chapman secured a 3-2 win against fellow Workington player Geoff Smith.
Smith had battled back from 2-0 down to even the score line. A black ball decider (the second of the match) went the way of Chapman who consolidated his mid-table spot.
The second mid-table clash involved Whitehaven and Seaton players Richard Kirkham and Paul Smith respectively.
Kirkham found himself 2-0 to the good before Smith pulled a frame back in an unusually low scoring frame, requiring only 32 points to take the frame.
This is possibly the lowest winning frame score ever in the league’s history. Two solid frames followed for Kirkham to record a 4-1 victory and a fourth place finish.
Only one fixture was completed in the top-flight as Workington’s Mark Tunstall earned a hard-fought 3-2 win over Andrew Mitchelhill of Cockermouth.
Mitchelhill did claw his way back into the match from 2-0 down, but it was Tunstall who was able to collect the points in the final frame decider. Mitchelhill lies in third with Tunstall fourth.
That result was enough to allow Workington’s Peter O’Hagan to secure the runner-up place with Mitchelhill all but assured of third.
The two finalists in the DVARD singles knockout should be decided this week:
Kevin Basnett (Scr) faces Richard Kirkham (+60) at the United Club tonight at 7.30pm and Kevin Kirkham (+20) takes on Geoff Smith (+60) at the Vets Club tomorrow night at 8pm.
