Workington Reds boss Danny Grainger plans a closer look at some of his young Development side this weekend.
Reds should have played at Macclesfield in the NPL West’s big game but the Silkmen are engaged in the FA Trophy.
So Grainger will have an in-house game involving his first teamers and members of the Development squad who play in the County League.
“We had two of them, Lewis Moore and Cain Pears training with us Tuesday and Thursday and they did well. That’s as well as Louis Webster and Scott Paden-Gale who have been with us before,” said.
It’s aimed at forging closer links with the Development squad so that when they step-up to the first team environment on match days they are comfortable with what is asked of them.
Reds will be able to get in two more training sessions next week before they are back in League action with another tasty game at Borough Park on October 15.
Runcorn Linnets won in west Cumbria recently in the FA Trophy and are also going well in the League, lying fourth on the same number of points as Reds (who are sixth) but from a game less.
By then Grainger hopes that midfielder Bobby Carroll could be back in the mix after picking-up an ankle injury in the defeat at Witton on August 27.
Three of Reds close season signings have been really unlucky with injuries. Apart from Carroll, winger Ben Hughes hasn’t played a single minute after damaging his back at work while Greg McCarragher played 20 minutes at Witton before suffering another broken bone in his foot.
“Bobby has been back running this week and isn’t far away from a playing return. Ben has also started running but he’s a bit further off while Greg is also getting closer to a return.
“If we get them three back it will be like having three new signings which is why I’m not over concerned at not being able to bring anyone else in on loan,” said Grainger.
