Workington Town fans will be hoping the club is getting all the bad news out of the way at once.

Right on the heels of Jamie Doran’s departure to neighbours Whitehaven comes an announcement that a leading forward is moving on.

Town have said today that Marcus O’Brien has taken the decision to move on from Town in order to continue to play in the Championship.

The club continues: “Cus has been a model professional since signing for Town and we’d like to wish him all the very best for the future.”

A former Millom forward O’Brien joined Town in November 2019 after playing for two years in the National Conference League with Egremont Rangers.

He has become a big crowd favourite at Derwent Park and last season won two awards – for the best try in 2022 and for being the Workington Town Supporters Club Player of the Year.

O’Brien actually signed for Town at the same time as Conor Fitzsimmons, who picked up three awards at the club last season including the coveted Players’ Player of the Year.

Fitzsimmons has consistently been linked with a move to a leading Championship club for 2023.
