Workington’s floral displays are blooming marvellous – and it’s official.
The town has been recognised as one of the best in the country in the annual Britain in Bloom Awards.
It was handed a silver medal in the large town category by awards organiser the Royal Horticultural Society.
Beth Dixon, Workington’s deputy mayor and chair of the town council’s environment committee, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded a silver for Workington in such a prestigious national competition. We are grateful to all our volunteers and staff and everyone else within our community for all their hard work and efforts. This award is recognition of this.”
RHS judges Geraldine King and Ann Holland visited Workington on August 5 and were taken to locations within the town to showcase the best work of the community, including the Helena Thompson Museum, railway station, Feenans Allotments, and Siddick Ponds.
Workington Town Council will be holding an informal Workington in Bloom working group meeting at 4.30pm on Thursday October 20 in its offices on Princess Street.
Everyone is welcome to attend; the group will be discussing the feedback from the judges and ideas for plans for next year. With the upcoming coronation, the council said it was very keen to hear ideas from the public and anyone who would like to get involved.
