West Cumbrian star Dan Bewley had to settle for second place in the Scottish Open at Edinburgh’s Armadale.
Bewley, a hot favourite to win the Cumbria Sports Personality of the Year after his phenomenal success on the world stage, could not get past home hero Sam Masters.
The Edinburgh skipper triumphed in what was billed as the final meeting ast Armadale before the stadium closes to speedway.
Masters won the trophy for the second time, following on from his victory in 2014, and was unbeaten in the qualifiers apart from losing a chain when leading his second ride, before taking the flag in the Final.
Bewley and Richie Worrall completed the podium finishers with Josh Pickering falling in the first staging of the Final with conditions affected by rain at that stage.
Pickering had won the semi-final ahead of Chris Harris, Justin Sedgmen and west Cumbrian Richard Lawson.
Masters said: “It’s great to win this here, because without this club I don’t think my career would be where it is today. I hope they will find a way to continue.”
A third west Cumbrian due to take part, Craig Cook of Glasgow Tigers, did not race and his rides were shared by the meeting reserves.
