Workington Reds Ladies have announced the signing of former Penrith Ladies defender Hannah Fawkes.
The 25-year-old west Cumbrian has played football for as long as she can remember, having started playing for Seaton when she was around six-years-old before moving to Penrith in 2013 to play Under-16’s and Ladies Football.
As a junior footballer she was proud to be selected to represent the County and to being invited to join the Centre of Excellence.
Having started-out as a midfielder, she spent most of her time in North West Women’s Regional football as a defender for Penrith and brings some valuable experience to the Workington ranks.
When asked what was behind the switch from blue to red Fawkes said: “I have been at Penrith for a long time and it was a difficult decision for me to leave the Club.
“I have committed a lot of my time to play for Penrith and I’ve had some really great times with the lasses, but I feel like the time is right for a fresh start and a new challenge.
“Workington is right on my door-step and I have been impressed by the way they are working hard to promote girls and ladies football.
“Being at Derwent Park as a supporter along with 300 others was a great experience from a female footballer’s perspective and seeing the following that the team is starting to build is exciting and I would love to be a part of what they are developing.
“The training session have been very in-sightful and I like that we have been taking a lot of time to look back on where we could have done better in previous games while also touching on the positives.”
“I’m looking forward to learning the playing style of the team and to understand what the coaches expect and hopefully with that I am able to do my bit to help the team deliver their goal.”
Manager Paul Mackenzie added: “Hannah joining us is a real boost. Although she is still young, she brings a lot of experience to the squad.
“I know it’s been a really tough call for Hannah to make in joining the club and face the prospect of lining up against her sister Heather, for the first time in their playing careers when we play against Penrith this season”.
“Hannah has settled in really well and we are looking forward to seeing her in action for us. She brings a directness in the way she plays and this is something that we are keen to take advantage of.”
