Carlisle United slipped to a third consecutive defeat last night when they went down 2-0 at Stockport County.
Paul Simpson, a former Stockport manager, saw his Carlisle side mostly second best to their hosts.
This latest loss followed Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat by Leyton Orient which had been preceded by a Papa John’s Trophy defeat at Barrow.
Paddy Madden, a former Carlisle player had created the opening goal on 20 minutes.
It was a clever ball over the top which fell invitingly for Myles Hippolyte who steered his shot into the bottom corner.
United, well down on possession in the first-half, did not have a single effort on target yet Stockport had a couple of decent chances to add to their tally.
Simpson clearly had words with his players at half-time because they were certainly much improved on the resumption.
Top scorer Kristian Dennis went closest to a goal for the Blues when he latched onto a long ball forward but steered his shot against a post.
By then Stockport had doubled their lead and again Madden had a part to play. He launched a counter-attack with a charge down the touchline and from Will Collar’s inch-perfect cross find Wootton headed home at the far post.
Carlisle have a tough task to stop the rot on Saturday when they travel to Tranmere although Rovers were held at home 1-1 by lowly Rochdale last night.
