Female asylum seekers have arrived at a Carlisle hotel – but they have no clothes or toiletries, a city councillor said.
Brian Wernham, who represents Stanwix Urban for the Liberal Democrats, has issued an urgent plea on behalf of the women, who are staying at the Cumbria Park Hotel on Scotland Road.
He said they had to leave their belongings at a processing centre in Kent before making their way to Carlisle.
He said: “I have been contacted by the manager of the hotel in Stanwix. The women refuge seekers have arrived but they are in urgent needs of donations. Winter coats, waterproofs, shoes, slippers, boots, jumpers and so on. Toiletries are often overlooked. Face cream, feminine hygiene products and socks. Bring them freshly laundered. If you can buy some new underwear and a few luxuries please do.
“The hotel manager has also asked for any working old mobile phones as well, but she asked for these to cleared of all settings and SIM card removed.”
Donations can be taken to to CRAG, Unit 48, Enterprise Centre. Email CRAG at [email protected] beforehand for a time to drop off items and directions.
He added that children were also due to arrive imminently.
He said: “This is a developing situation. There is little or no evident planning. Children are expected very shortly. Last night the women had to leave all their possessions at the processing centre and now they have literally nothing. Please bring children’s clothes and shoes and slippers and socks as well.”
