As the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League fixtures stepped aside again it was Workington Golf Club A who made a massive step towards semi-final qualification in a trophy competition.
In the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal and Demolition-sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial TKO Handicap Trophy they scored a 3-2 away win against Maryport Social.
A break of 31 from Ben Scott (+34 handicap) nevertheless gave Maryport the early advantage as he went on to take the first frame to put his team 1-0 up.
Back came the Golf Club, however. as Lewis Tilley (+40) took a close second and with team mate Stephen Jackson (+38) presiding in an equally close third the Golf Club A outfit were 2-1 to the good.
This didn’t deter the Social side and with a relatively convincing victory Maryport’s Andrew Scott (+39) took the match to a decider in fine style.
Giving away a sizable handicap start in the last Ryan Ismay (+11) could have been forgiven for a somewhat drawn-out affair but with some superb potting he all but took his team though to the semis with a landslide final frame win.
Workington Cons recovered magnificently from their first qualifying game loss with a 4-1 home win over cup specialists in Workington’s United Club.
A Dave Chapman (+32) first frame win looked to give the United Club the perfect start but as Richard McCarthy (+11) and Alan Moore won the next two the Cons Club were in the ascendancy.
Frame three presented an opportunity for the United Club to drag themselves back into the match but with Dave Holland (+29) in no mood to give his teams’ advantage away he assured the match win in confident fashion.
As the final frame progressed the United Club looked to be getting one back to obviously improve their frame difference, but adding to the pain it was Ryan Barker (+21) who increased the winning margin to 4-1 with a black ball victory.
In the final qualifying match of the week Station Road Club travelled to Workington Golf Club and with a 4-1 win they almost certainly pushed the Golf Club B side towards a TKO plate spot.
In another match that started well for the defeated side Paul Brown (+40) put the Golf Club B team 1-0 up.
However as Chris Hunter (+32), Keith Telford (+50) and Mike Walker (+20) won the next three they put the Station Road outfit in an unassailable position at 3-1.
The final frame of the match saw a closer affair but in finishing with a flourish it was Darren Lawson who galvanised the victory to the delight of his team mates.
