Barrow council leader Ann Thomson has joined dozens of Labour local government chiefs in signing a letter to Chancellor Jeremy Hunt ahead of today’s Autumn Statement, calling for councils to be given urgent funding.
The cash is needed so councils can continue to deliver front-line services and combat the most severe cost of living crisis for decades, the politicians said.
Cllr Thomson said: “We won’t be able to deliver services properly if this Conservative government is going to yet again swing an axe at council budgets.
“We also have a duty to make sure that our most vulnerable residents are offered the support they need.
“That’s why I had no hesitation in adding my name to the list of local government Labour leaders who are laying it on the line for Jeremy Hunt.
“People who were donating to foodbanks are now using them and children are going to school without having eaten a proper meal.
“Councils need adequate funding to function properly and Jeremy Hunt should heed what we have to say.”
