Wigton were 53-24 winners at Workington in Counties 1 Cumbria but the game was tougher than the score suggests.
Although the Greens had more pace in their side they didn’t really start using it until the last 20 minutes.
Wigton had played against the strong wind in the first half and it was Workington who scored first through a series of forward drives, setting-up field position from the penalties Wigton gave away.
On several occasions Wigton would work their way up-field keeping possession only to give penalties away and be back defending their own try line.
Despite this Wigton went in at half-time with a 15-12 lead and although the Zebras used their big forwards to good effect the visitors looked dangerous when they got the ball wide and increased their lead in the second half.
The Wigton try scorers were Elliot Armstrong (2), Ben Postlethwaite, Rocco Okesene, Fergus Ledingham, Robert Marrs, Mark Deans, Billy Stafford and Stuart Carruthers who landed four conversions.
There were stand-out performances from Ali Gaitskell and Billy Stafford in the half backs while young Will Wilson continues to improve with each game.
Workington’s tries came from Andrew McCrickerd (2), Sam Robinson and Darren Watson with two conversions from Robinson.
