Workington Town are ready to launch their first ladies team after an inaugural meeting last month.
The first training session has been organised for tomorrow under the guidance of one of the most famous names in Town’s history.
Jon Roper has been named as coach of the new ladies side and he was the third generation of his family to play professional rugby league.
He follows father Tony and before that his grandfather Sol, who is a select member of the club’s Hall of Fame.
Jon, 46, ended his playing career at Derwent Park in 2007 after 24 starts for the club but had previously played 121 times for Warrington and also appeared for London, Salford, Castleford, Leigh, Rochdale, Halifax and Oldham.
In total, he played 259 games as a pro and scored 107 tries with one call up in 1999 to the England squad.
His father Tony, 65, was a one-club man playing for Town from 1977 to 1987 during which time he notched up 154 starts and scored 34 tries.
But the famous of the Roper dynasty was grandfather Sol who served Town for 12 years and played 397 games with 94 tries to his name. He then finished his career with five seasons at Whitehaven where he was also player coach.
He died in October 2015 aged 79 and before then had been installed in Town’s Hall of Fame with his legendary half-back partner Harry Archer.
The first training session for the new Ladies team is tomorrow morning, Saturday December 3 at Derwent Park, starting at 10am.
