Carlisle United eased through to the quarter finals of the Fred Conway Cup last night with a 6-0 win over Bransty Rangers at Penrith’s Frenchfield.
They used six members of the first team squad – Gabe Breeze, Jamie Devitt, Sonny Hilton, Duncan Idehen, Joel Senior and Tobi Sho-Silva.
Making up the starting line-up were youth second years Matt Bell, Ryan Carr and Mason Hardy, along with first years Romeo Park and Robbie Swinburn.
Although they had dominated for the first quarter of the game Bransty defended doggedly but the breakthrough came on 23 minutes.
Bell found enough space in a tight position by the corner flag to send in a low, fizzed cross which Sho-Silva determined to make his and got there ahead of the defenders to smash home.
smashed it over the line as he bullied his way through yellow shirts to make the connection.
After Devitt had struck the post Carlisle got their second when the same player found Hardy who finished it off from close range.
The third goal of the half came when Senior did well to get to a ;pass and put in a cross which was stabbed home from close range by Sho-Silva.
Bransty’s first serious effort came early in the second half when substitute Aidan Graham lobbed Breeze but watched agonisingly as the ball bounced against the underside of the bar and stayed out.
But most of the action was at the other where Bransty keeper Dylan Cromwell proved himself a real Ironside with outstanding saves to deny Devitt and Sho-Silva.
The fourth United goal eventually came on 78 minutes after a patient build up ended with Hardy toe-poking home his second.
Sho-Silva completed his hat-trick with a powerful header and Devitt guided home the sixth near the end.
Carlisle now join Workington Reds, holders Carlisle City, Penrith, Keswick, Greystoke, Unisun Athletic and Whitehaven in the draw for the quarter finals.
