A man accused of trying to murder a woman, alleged to have been stabbed repeatedly in Carlisle, has appeared in court.
Matthew Ryan, 38, faces one charge. This alleges the attempted murder of his partner Kerry Wilson on December 17.
Ryan appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning following an incident which is said to have happened in front of witnesses at Ellesmere Way in the city at around 3pm on Saturday.
During a brief outline of the circumstances, prosecutor George Shelley alleged that Miss Wilson had been stabbed multiple times, primarily to the torso and back.
In the aftermath of the incident, she was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with three confirmed major stab wounds, the court heard, and had since undergone surgery.
“At the time of this statement being written,” said Mr Shelley during a short outline, “Miss Wilson was stable but remained in an induced coma.”
Police said earlier today that the condition of the woman, who is aged in her 50s, was critical.
When he appeared in front of magistrates this morning, Ryan, of Bannisdale Way, Carlisle, confirmed his name, age and address. He sported facial hair, wore a light grey jumper during the 10-minute hearing and was accompanied in the dock by two security guards.
No plea was entered to the charge of attempted murder that he faces.
No bail application was made by the defence solicitor, Chris Toms.
Magistrates said the charge was so serious that it lay outside their jurisdiction. They committed the case to Carlisle Crown Court.
Ryan is due to appear at the crown court in front of a judge on January 16 and in the meantime he was remanded in custody.
