Workington Town’s squad paraded in their community club colours at last night’s training session ahead of Sunday’s derby.
Town travel to Whitehaven looking to defend the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy they won at Derwent Park last season.
Coach Tony Murray said: “It was the idea of my assistant Neil Frazer, just to show where the lads started their rugby careers.
“I thought it was a nice touch, especially as on Sunday there will be a lot of people at the game who are involved with local community clubs.”
Town have had a big influx of recruits from local clubs over the winter and the squad has a high percentage of Cumbria-bred players.
One who isn’t is Sean Sabutey, a Ghana International who signed a one-year contract from Glebe Dirty Reds, who play in the Ron Massey Cup in Australia.
Sabutey, who can play centre, wing or full back, has Emu Plains as his community club and is settling in after arriving in the UK for the first time.
Murray said: “I think the weather has been a bit strange for him but he’s settled into the training well. He was at Bradford last Saturday with us and has been working hard this week. We are looking forward to seeing him in action.”
The Town coach will have 22 of his squad available on Sunday and is hoping that all will be able to get some game time.
“With our first League One fixture cancelled through West Wales dropping out we want as many lads as possible to get game time in our three pre-season fixtures so I’m hoping we will be able to extend our use of substitutes from the original six,” he said.
