COVID-19 jab centre reopens at Newton Rigg

The vaccination team at Newton Rigg are back in action offering COVID and flu jabs.

Recent changing legislative arrangements forced the Newton Rigg site to close briefly – as it is not on NHS property – but with the swift support of local MP, Dr Neil Hudson; Eden District Council; and site-owners, A. W. Jenkinson, the site is up and running again.

The team has been serving the demand for vaccinations at the Newton Rigg site for over 12 months, prior that that, they operated from the auction mart site.

They provide enhanced access to vaccinations, which is particularly critical in rural Cumbria where public transport and centralised services can hinder people’s ability to get protected.

Dianne Hutchinson, clinical lead at Newton Rigg, said:  “We are delighted to be back in business following a short closure. The experienced team of clinicians at Newton Rigg have been offering protection against both COVID and flu to the public from across Cumbria for some time now.

“As cases of both COVID and flu remain high, putting pressure on the healthcare system, it is more important than ever for people to ensure they are appropriately protected.”

Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and the Border, said: “At a time when respiratory virus infections remain high across Cumbria, maintaining open and easy access to vaccination sites is crucial to protecting vulnerable individuals and the wider healthcare system. Access is a particular priority in rural Eden where some of my constituents have expressed concerns with reaching services.

“As such, I was proud to provide the Newton Rigg Centre with support as its experienced staff sought to continue keeping our county protected from respiratory diseases this winter. Our county’s Covid vaccination rollout was inspiring, but it is vital we keep going and protect our communities against flu and COVID. I continue to urge those who are eligible to receive booster vaccinations to do so.”

The centre offers COVID vaccinations to anyone aged five and over, and flu vaccinations to the vulnerable and those aged both under and over the age of 65.

Anyone eligible for the above vaccinations can either book an appointment on the NHS website or simply walk in during opening hours. There is dedicated children’s area, ample free parking at the site and step free access.

It is open Wednesdays 2pm to 6pm, Fridays 8am to noon and Sundays 10am to 2pm.
